The Results are In

Well, in spite of both my family doctor and the orthopedic specialist telling my that the initial prognosis was no surgery and no major damage, the MRI revealed that my ACL is completely severed. The good news is that the ortho doctor says that he's never seen a knee as stable as mine after this type of injury and that I should seriously consider not getting surgery to repair it. It might, however, require that I never step foot on the basketball court again. He suggests that I get back to exercising regularly by jogging, swimming, or biking (none of those three hold nearly the fun quotient that basketball does). Then in an undetermined time frame I can try playing ball and see how it goes. Then determine if I should get surgery or have a brace custom made so I can play again. They put a movement gauge on my knee and it said that I have an additional 2mm of movement versus my good knee. The average additional movement for an ACL tear is 5-7 mm, so the doctor wasn't really sure what to tell me. My plan is to get a second opinion and try to get in touch with Dave Badger to get his opinion on the matter.

I can't tell you how disappointed I was to hear that news. I've never had issues with my legs before and this is one of the worst things that can happen.

Um, what ever happened with your bishop being released? No news is good news?

Oh man, I'm so sorry to hear that. It's quite amazing, however, that your kneee is so stable... Our thoughts and prayers are sent your way.

No news on the bishop being released. Everyone thinks he will be by the end of the year, but so far no action on that front.

It was nice talking to Dave Badger. Sounds just the same to me, but I'm sure he looks different. Still the same old nice guy I remember.

Hey, why is it that I feel so bad when I can't give my kids what they want for Christmas, because we don't have that kind of money right now? I'm still waiting for that "I can do what I want because I have enough money" time in my life. Ack...

There's never enough money and there's never a shortage of wants that are hanging out there to be fulfilled. It's a matter of priority. This year I'm hoping to get my family to focus on one gift for each other and avoid the stress and excess that Christmas has become. Hard to convince the women in my life of that plan . . .!!

That's what Stu says we have to do. I think it will be less stressful, especially when the bills come in. Married kids and grandkids are the best, but you have to have limits, even if I wish I didn't have to have them. Oh, by the way, what did Dr. Badger say about your knee?

missing the ACL sucks !
(I know)
I haven't been able to play b-ball since 1977 (I was playing at the Smith fieldhouse when my left knee blew) Hope you have better luck.
